I've been so anxious to see this film and was thrilled to find a 4k copy on the shelf early a couple of days ago. Whoa. Not many films make me genuinely uneasy, but this one definitely did. There have been some pretty highly critically acclaimed scary movies in the last few years, and as much as I loved "The Witch", "It Follows", "The Babadook", "It Comes At Night" and "A Quiet Place".....none of these chilled me half as much as "Hereditary". The entire cast is perfection but Toni Collette is astonishing, not surprised, but she can go really deep and heavy, it would be difficult to comprehend if she wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this performance. And I think Alex Wolff's performance helped pull the thing off...he's brilliant.

"Hereditary" sits comfortable next to "The Shining", "The Wicker Man", "Rosemary's Baby", "The Thing", "The Witch" and a few of my other favorite horror films....thinking back on those after seeing this one, they don't seem quite as scary? I gotta get in a couple more viewings in the next months to be sure, but it just might end up being my favorite horror film of all time. It almost made me feel like I needed to go to church Sunday morning....it's still rattling around in my mind. If you just like mindless jump scare stuff it might not be for you, but if you want to see a real horror film...don't miss it. EPIC HORROR. End of story. :-)

The almost-wet snapping sounds in between shots are a small thing, but a smart editing choice that adds a lot to the overall sense of uneasiness.

I can't praise this film enough. This is what horror films should strive to be. Original storyline (i.e., not a sequel/reboot/remake), stellar acting (particularly from Collette), excellent cinematography, brilliant music, neither too short nor too long, an unpredictable plot, and a focus on lingering, pervasive dread and terror instead of an over-reliance on cheap jumpscares. This may well be my favourite horror film, and generally I'm very hard to impress. I can't wait to see what Aster does next.

This is the first horror movie that I have enjoyed in twenty years. Wonderful suspense and fright without the usual cheap jump scares.

This was indeed creepy and violent, the EPITOME OF HORRORS. I've watched conjuring, shining, insidious etc. they are all good, but this one is one completely on a different level and it's utterly disturbing and WICKED! sweet mother of joseph!!!

I feel like those people who don't get why this movie is one of the scariest and best horror movies of modern cinema aren't at the same level of wavelength as those who get it. The eerie, dreadful, uneasiness, and depressing depictions throughout the whole movie was something I havent seen in a LONG time. Not one point of the movie was there any sense of happiness. Nothing but guilt. Scenes were disturbing: from the sounds in the backround to the strange movements of the characters. Not only that, the reactions of each character to their inexplicable and terrifying environment was so realistic. For example, the still shot of Peter sitting in his car after the accident, too tramautized to move, was incredible. The slow pans, the still and silent shots, the amazing cinematography of this film was perfect and captured the moments in the best way. 10/10.

Scenes of this movie were filmed at my high school (West High), but it was so good and I was so absored in the story I didn't even notice the halls I had walked through for years without my friend pointing it out to me. Honestly one of the best horror movies I have ever watched 😭

this movie left me with this gross, uneasy feeling in my stomach for hours after i saw it. its just wrong on so many levels, it really gets in deep under your skin and just sits. these are all compliments to the movie, btw, it being a horror movie and all. not many movies have ever left me feeling that way before.

Just saw it about 20 minutes ago. It was fantastic. Just the cinematogrphy alone was splendid. The acting was superb, the plot very interesting, the setting (house, the environment) was great. The scares were not too many. Sometimes they were shocking and crippling, other times subtle (which sticks with you longer). Just the plain mood and atmosphere of this film was incredibly spooky and unsettling. It leaves you paranoid. I might experience issues with sleeping tonight.

It has nothing to do with "the witch" and everything with the 70's master -horror-pieces. This Ari Aster knows how to film, edit and direct. Alex Wolff going up.

I love horror movies. I've watched tons of it over the years ever since I was small. This one I must say is the film I've been waiting for. This is how horror movie should be. Looking forwards to the director's new work
